What is 45C8 steel?

45C8 is a medium-carbon, unalloyed engineering steel with about 0.45% carbon, used where a component needs more strength, hardness and wear resistance than mild steel but does not justify a chrome or chrome-moly alloy.

The designation follows the Indian convention for plain-carbon steels: the figure indicates roughly 0.45% mean carbon, and the manganese sits around 0.8%. In practical terms 45C8 is the Indian name for the same steel the rest of the world calls C45, AISI 1045 or S45C. A buyer holding a drawing that calls for any of those four can be served from the same heat, provided the certified chemistry meets the tighter of the two specifications.

At this carbon level the steel responds well to normalising and to through-hardening in small to medium sections, and it takes a clean finish on a lathe or CNC. It is the default choice across Indian machine shops and forging units for general-purpose shafting, studs and pins — strong enough for moderate loads, cheaper and more available than alloy steel, and forgiving to machine. For higher fatigue loads or larger hardened sections, buyers step up to EN19 (42CrMo4) or SAE 4140.

45C8 chemical composition

Typical wrought 45C8 chemistry. Sulphur and phosphorus are residual ceilings; the heat-wise mill test certificate carries the actual ladle analysis for the bars you receive.

Manganese (Mn)0.60–0.90Aids hardenability and ties up sulphur
Silicon (Si)0.10–0.35Deoxidiser; minor strengthening

Phosphorus (P)0.050 maxKept low to protect toughness

Exact limits shift slightly between the governing carbon-steel standards. Confirmed values are stated on the MTC for each heat.

45C8 mechanical properties

Mechanical properties depend on section size and condition (as-rolled, normalised or quenched-and-tempered). The figures below are typical for normalised bar in common diameters; a quenched-and-tempered small section reaches higher strength and hardness. What is 45C8 equivalent to?

45C8 sits in the global 0.45% carbon family. The nearest international designations are listed below. Equivalents are close matches, not exact substitutes — when a drawing names a specific standard, order to that standard and confirm against the MTC.

45C8 and S45C are effectively the same grade under two naming systems; both carry roughly 0.45% carbon with a comparable manganese band. Against EN8D (the close-control EN8, around 0.40–0.45% C), 45C8 runs marginally higher carbon — see the 45C8 vs EN8D comparison for where each fits.

Can 45C8 be hardened? Heat treatment

Yes. 45C8 is most often supplied normalised, then through-hardened in small sections or surface-hardened (induction or flame) where a wear face is needed. Because it is a plain-carbon steel its hardenability is limited, so large sections do not harden uniformly to the core; size the part accordingly or move to an alloy grade. Temper immediately after quenching.

45C8 — typical heat-treatment temperatures (°C)
OperationTemperature
Forging1100–1250
Normalising850–880 (air cool)
Annealing840–870 (furnace cool)
Hardening850–880 (water; oil for thin or intricate sections)
Tempering550–660 (to suit required hardness)

Water-quenching complex shapes risks cracking — prefer oil or a milder medium for intricate parts.

45C8 steel — frequently asked questions

What is 45C8 steel?
45C8 is a medium-carbon, unalloyed engineering steel carrying about 0.45% carbon and roughly 0.8% manganese. It is the Indian designation for the steel known elsewhere as C45, AISI 1045 or S45C. It is used for shafts, axles, studs, gears and forgings that need more strength and wear resistance than mild steel without the cost of an alloy grade.
What is the chemical composition of 45C8?
Typical 45C8 chemistry is carbon 0.40–0.50%, manganese 0.60–0.90%, silicon 0.10–0.35%, with sulphur and phosphorus held to 0.050% maximum each. Sulphur and phosphorus are residual ceilings; the actual ladle analysis for your bars is printed on the heat-wise mill test certificate.
What are the mechanical properties of 45C8?
In the normalised condition 45C8 typically gives tensile strength 620–720 MPa, yield 340–460 MPa, elongation 15–20% and hardness 180–230 HB. Properties depend on section size and heat-treatment condition; quenched-and-tempered small sections reach higher strength, and certified values appear on the MTC.
What is 45C8 equivalent to?
45C8 is equivalent to AISI/SAE 1045, EN/DIN C45 (1.0503), JIS S45C and BS 970 080M46 (EN9). These are close matches in the 0.45% carbon family rather than exact substitutes. Where a drawing names a specific standard, order to that standard and confirm against the mill test certificate.
Can 45C8 be hardened?
Yes. 45C8 through-hardens in small to medium sections and takes induction or flame hardening on wear surfaces. Hardenability is limited because it is a plain-carbon steel, so large sections do not harden fully to the core. Harden from 850–880 °C (oil for intricate shapes), then temper immediately at 550–660 °C.
Is 45C8 weldable?
45C8 is weldable but needs care because of its carbon level. Preheating and post-weld stress relief are recommended, particularly on thicker sections, to avoid hard, brittle zones and cracking. Where frequent welding is required, a lower-carbon grade such as 35C8 or a mild steel is easier to join.
What is 45C8 used for?
45C8 is used for transmission and machine shafts, axles, spindles, studs, bolts, pins, keys, light-to-medium-duty gears, levers, crankshafts and forged blanks. It is also chosen where a part is induction- or flame-hardened to give a wear-resistant surface over a tougher core.
What sizes and forms does Ambhe Ferro supply 45C8 in?
Ambhe Ferro supplies 45C8 as hot-rolled rounds (23.5–80 mm dia), bright bars (21–63.5 mm), hexagons (23.5–52.5 mm across flats) and RCS (55, 63, 75 mm). Supply conditions include hot rolled, annealed, normalised and bright. Standard length is 5–6 m, with custom cut lengths to order.
What is the MOQ for 45C8, and do you provide a mill test certificate?
The minimum order quantity is 5 MT per size. Every dispatch carries a heat-wise mill test certificate stating the chemical analysis and mechanical properties for that heat. Third-party inspection by SGS, BV or TÜV can be arranged on request before dispatch.
45C8 vs EN8D — which should I choose?
Both are medium-carbon steels for similar shaft and axle work. 45C8 (≈1045) runs marginally higher carbon, so it reaches slightly higher hardness; EN8D is the close-control EN8 grade with tight sulphur and phosphorus control, useful when a drawing calls out EN8. For most parts they are interchangeable — see the 45C8 vs EN8D comparison for details.
